Air Force conducts rescue on ship during the night

The Air Force rescued an Indian man who was on board the cargo ship ‘LALLY SCHULTE’ and in need of urgent medical attention during the night of 30 October. At the time of the rescue, the vessel was sailing about 100 km southwest of Portimão.

The rescue was carried out using an EH-101 Merlin helicopter from Squadron 751 - ‘Pumas’, after the Lisbon Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC - Lisbon) received the alert that the patient needed to be rescued.

After being safely picked up by the Rescue-Saver and receiving the necessary first aid from the Aeronautical Nurse, the 39-year-old man was transported to Transit Aerodrome No. 1 in Portela, from where he was taken to a hospital.

It should be noted that the Air Force maintains a permanent search and rescue capability, covering a vast area of responsibility corresponding to 5,816,562 km², one of the largest in the North Atlantic.
